Courage1989

Courage1989

So 2 from 3 heading into the Wales game this 6Ns.

Was just thinking about 23 possibilities coming into the next match, with Yarde returning to action, Billy V pulling a knock, Wilson getting some serious work into him. Attwood starting to have a real influence off the bench.

A first glance at the 23 below imho:

1. Joe Marler
2. Dylan Hartley
3. David Wilson
4. Joe Launchbury
5. Courtney Lawes
6. Tom Wood
7. Chris Robshaw
8. Ben Morgan
9. Danny Care
10. Owen Farrell
11. Jonny May
12. Billy Twelvetrees
13. Luther Burrell
14. Jack Nowell
15. Mike Brown

Substitutes:
16. Mako Vunipola
17. Tom Youngs
18. Henry Thomas
19. David Attwood
20. Matt Kvesic
21. Lee Dickson
22. George Ford
23. Alex Goode/Marland Yarde/Brad Barritt

I haven't really worked out what he wants with 23 shirt? Kvesic covers the whole backrow, can be an out and out 7 and has hit a bit of form since working around England, chance of a start? Maybe Johnson, Ewers or Dickinson??

Thoughts?
4.

Think we'll see Johnson on the bench, though I'd go with Kvesic and most likely Goode will keep the 23 shirt, though I'd be going for Watson or Yarde, the rest looks a fairly safe bet. There is scope if Goode stays on the bench for the Wales match for Manu to get the 23 shirt Vs Italy

Courage1989

Courage1989

I said we'd win, and we did win.

Sounds arrogant, but there's a confidence about the side, not an arrogance. There's no chippiness, just a desperate desire to win, and play well for each other.

Here's my ratings for Wales game based upon watching the match 3 times now:

First XV:
1. Joe Marler - A bruising encounter at scrum time, and in the loose. Got the better of Jones at scrum time and offered far more in defence and the loose. - 7.5/10
2. Dylan Hartley - Pinged 4 times for penalties, although 1 very harsh call on an air tackle with the man jumping into him. His lineout throwing was very good, only 1 lost due to good work by the welsh callers, and his general play and work ethic showed him why he was no 1. - 6.5/10
3. David Wilson - My pick of the front row. Excellent in the loose, leading up to the first try. A real nuisance at the breakdown and very intelligent putting himself in the right areas about the park. Had Jenkins on toast, and also took note of what the referee was asking of him at scrum time. - 8.5/10
4. Joe Launchbury - Just beaten by Lawes for my MoM, but that's not a bad thing, he was nearly as good in every aspect. He's very good to world class at everything he does, and the consistency is now showing. A Launch like performance. - 8.5/10
5. Courtney Lawes - Astonishing Performance. His best. Tackling was inch perfect, defensive line was excellent, and intelligent in positioning. Lineouts were imperious, and his work in the loose was a treasure. - 9.5/10 MOM
6. Tom Wood - A real nuisance at the breakdown, although slightly quieter than Robshaw. Ended up cleaning alot of defensive mess and applied alot of pressure on the half back kicking game. - 7.5/10
7. Chris Robshaw (Capt) - See Tom Wood above, but add a real captains innings. His persistence in getting the team going forward with his personal 1 out option is becoming a trait, and also a weapon. The team is utilising his inherent nature to be first man by using him as a decoy for strike moves. In the loose willing and able as always, and very irritating for wales with the hack throughs and persistence at slowing Welsh ball. - 8/10
8. Ben Morgan - Effective is a good word to describe his performance. An 8 being utilised as a playmaker in midfield, and expanding englands attack width, whilst himself offering a carrying ball option, which was well utilised in carving out opportunities on the narrow welsh rush defence. He cleaned up an awful lot of ball and set a target for his players to run onto. Will and did always make yards. The no 8 is a key cog, and they both are playing well. - 8.25/10
9. Danny Care - He's dynamite. He's on form, and he makes opposing players think for 80 mins. He's got flaws in his game, but the constant sniping is giving farrell time on the ball, which may or may not be a good thing, but time is never a bad thing in theory. His pass has improved, but his decision making now is exceptional. The real 9, and 1 of the best 9s going at the moment, in an era where there is a dearth, but he's a traditional and a natural - 9/10.
10. Owen Farrell - His distribution may hinder England longer term, but that is more than made up by his other strengths. He bulldozed through Jonathan Davies, which I thought I'd never see. His work at the breakdown for a 10, is unheard of. His goalkicking under pressure was 100% and although he will have his detractors, and always will do I feel, he kicking out of hand superbly and his decision making and game management is getting better. As seen in the build up to Burrell's try with the cross field. - 8/10 (deserved)
11. Jonny May - He tends to run away from support a little too much, and is a little too lateral. Has pace but doesn't back himself and is probably a bit too lightweight for his size. A threat he is, but he isn't utilising his strengths well given the ball he has had. - 6/10
12. Billy Twelvetrees - He's growing, game by game, into a top class centre, with very few weaknesses. His distribution and game management, although still a little ropey at times, shone through today, and his organisation in the backline is increasing. See Burrell Try. - 8/10
13. Luther Burrell - The other half to the centre combo. He's playing well, and he's confident. 3 tries in 4 for a newbie is a good return and he isn't flinching in the big games either which is a good sign. He will give Tuilagi a big fight for the 13 jersey and is currently the man in possession. Should have perhaps finished the wonder move into the corner but for some Halfpenny heroics. Also note, his defence so far has been superb. - 8.25/10
14. Jack Nowell - Outplayed May, but it wasn't overly hard to do so. He's not got the pace to make it on the wing, but his all round game is very good. Mini Brown he may eventually be, but he needs to sharpen up and play with confidence. His awareness is slightly poor, as seen in his break where he had a 1 on 1 with Cuthbert and although Cuthbert is a big man, he is a very poor defender who Nowell should have spotted and gone past. Didn't play badly at all though. - 7/10
15. Mike Brown - Sunday proved he's the 2nd best Full back in world rugby. He is extremely good at everything. He does need to pass at times, but if you consistently break the game line as much as he does and with ease, and can be as dependable as he is in defence as of late, with England's current structure it doesn't overly matter. The concern you'd have is why the Welsh wanted to kick long to him as a tactic. Was eating yards up all day, and his all round game was very good. - 8.5/10

Subs:
16. Mako Vunipola - Scrummaging may never come naturally to the lad, and he might not improve, but in the loose he's very good, although has a tendancy to get picked at ruck time. - 5/10
17. Tom Youngs - Hit all his throws! Made a few tackles, and kept a decent defensive line in tact - 6/10
18. Henry Thomas - Came with 10 to go, again showed an assurance at scrum time and wasn't bested by his opposite number. Also made a nuisance of himself in loose and at ruck time. - 6.5/10
19. David Attwood - Came on with 10 to go, and made a few hard hits but little more - 6/10
20. Tom Johnson - On for 2 mins as a sub for Morgan, didn't touch the ball. - 5/10
21. Lee Dickson - Approximately on for 30 seconds, barely got a touch - 5/10
22. George Ford - Approximately on for 30 seconds, some nice touches, but that's all. - 5/10
23. Alex Goode - Came on in the 79th min, didn't touch the ball - 5/10

Courage1989

The squad for Italy has been named and it seems pretty set in stone what the side will be, but here's my crack at the 23 in order:

1. Joe Marler
2. Dylan Hartley
3. David Wilson
4. Joe Launchbury
5. Courtney Lawes
6. Tom Wood
7. Chris Robshaw (Capt)
8. Ben Morgan
9. Danny Care
10. Owen Farrell
11. Jonny May
12. Billy Twelvetrees
13. Luther Burrell
14. Jack Nowell
15. Mike Brown

Subs:
16. Mako Vunipola
17. Tom Youngs
18. Henry Thomas
19. David Attwood
20. Tom Johnson
21. Lee Dickson
22. George Ford
23. Manu Tuilagi

Notes: Lancaster seems to want the side that finished and earned the right to play again given the licence to do so against Italy. I'd expect England to want to put width on the ball, apply pressures to the corner and maul over for a few early scores to give the side a buffer.

Once the italians come back, he'll want the side to soak up what pressure they apply, especially with Castrogiovanni out, and England to run a few scores towards the end of the first half.

Second Half if the gap is big enough, George Ford and Manu Tuilagi will immediately come off the bench, and hopefully they play well and it turns into a run away. Ford to excel would be a desired outcome for England fans.

Don't think we'll win the 6 Nations, BOD will get the last laugh hopefully against a poor french side, but 40 pts is not out of the question.

No Alex Goode as a utility back will also please some fans as well. Backs on the bench are the strongest impact we've had in a very long time.

Dos look the expected team. Backs off the bench seem more impactful than suited to being subbed on for injury in the 3rd minute. Hope we do go well but our last two wins have been very close over Italy, and it wasn't until the last quarter Vs Ireland they went to pieces having made a lot of tackles.

I've really enjoyed the Henry Thomas cameos, wouldn't mind seeing him get more than the last few minutes. Hopefully both he and Ford come on after 50 minutes

Might well have a look at Devoto, depending on what Bath plan for him next season. It'd be early, and may signal an end to Eastmond's chances, but Devoto is a hugely promising talent. JCW may interest them too from the extra players list, but Cole, Wilson and Thomas are all likely to avoid the final. Not sure I can see Cips or LCD being involved, one they've shown no indication of trusting and that's huge for Burt'n'Co and the other just hasn't played enough.

Lancaster always takes a third development hooker, so it's possible LCD could go. Lanc spoke of including him as soon as possible.

What I'd like to see (not what we will see):
1. Joe Marler
2. Tom Youngs
3. David Wilson
4. Joe Launchbury
5. David Attwood
6. Chris Robshaw
7. Matt Kvesic
8. Ben Morgan
9. Danny Care
10. George Ford
11. Marland Yarde
12. Billy Twelvetrees
13. Manu Tuilagi
14. Christian Wade
15. Mike Brown

Substitutes:
16. Matt Mullan
17. Luke Cowan Dickie
18. Henry Thomas
19. Graham Kitchener
20. Dave Ewers
21. Ben Youngs
22. Freddie Burns
23. Ollie Devoto

Manu to cover wing, although I don't like it, Lancaster can see him as a winger potentially.

I still believe we can win 1 test. Not the series, 1 test will do.

He might see Brown as better cover still for the wing. I wouldn't put Devoto in the 23 shirt though, that shirt belongs to someone with more pace even if you wanted to say Devoto would give you cover at 15. One test is a big ask still, and would probably represent a decent tour. The best England team I've seen snuck a win down in NZ, and this NZ team is much better than the '03 side.

Any link to him saying that no-one in the final is going at all? Because everything I can find, including more recent stuff, is saying that they only miss the first test.

Ian Ritchie has stated;

keeping players in the Aviva Premiership will form a central part of his post-World Cup strategy.
"We should not be behind in making it economically right for people to continue to play in this country," he said.
"I don't like a scenario where someone says 'I can get blank when I go overseas'. We should be able to match all of that over here.
"We should be absolutely at the top of the pile here. We should help to try and achieve that and we should be unashamed of that."
Premiership clubs operate under a salary cap that increases to £5 million next season, while England players benefit from a match fee of £15,000.
Negotiations between the RFU and Premiership Rugby, the body that represents the 12 top flight clubs, are set to begin on a new deal over releasing players for international matches. Ritchie hinted that the RFU is hoping for a collaborative approach to convincing England players to remain at home.
"The Premiership salary cap is not a matter for me, it is a matter for Premiership Rugby," he said.
"Players get what they get from the club, from England, which is not an insignificant contribution, and then there's the commercial stuff that he generates off the back of that.
"What we have to do is make that as attractive as possible. I want to see really successful club rugby and that applied across all levels.
"We want to see that and that means they need to be commercially successful. We shouldn't be seen as being in competition with that, we should be seen as helping and assisting it."

Now that's all okay I suppose, but it does ignore the reality that our TV pales in comparison next to the French one, and yet again with the RFU gives an indication of a wish but little actual detail on what they'll do or what they think should happen, and it's for this sort of inspired leadership they get a six figure bonus

Hoping for a major interest boost off the back of the RWC I guess. BT are probably banking on the same thing in many ways.

On a completely separate note, if Wade isn't fit for NZ, there's talk that they'll send him to the USA to sprint training (I guess american football type camps). Few folks asking why he doesn't just go to Margot Wells, but I suspect the American camps are extremely professional considering the cash in american football, and will offer more than just straight line speed.
